Girtin was one of the watercolor artists who transformed our perception of the past in that wave of romantic imagery of ruin that swept through Europe in the eigtheenth century.
Our ruins now are sterilized in comparison with the wild riot of clinging vegetation of the untended ruin ...

... all for the sake of health and safety - that masonry will not fall on the innocent visitor to the past.
